Protecting Our Environment as We Grow

Huntsville’s natural environment is one of our greatest strengths. Protecting our lakes, forests and green spaces must remain a priority as we plan for our community’s future.

Growth will continue in Huntsville, as it will in most communities. I believe we can meet the need for housing, jobs and services while taking meaningful steps to protect the environment. That means thoughtful planning, preserving trees and natural vegetation wherever possible, and considering environmental protection from the beginning.

Working With the Experts

I am committed to continuing our strong relationships with the Muskoka Watershed Council and Friends of the Muskoka Watershed. We should listen to and draw on the expertise of organizations working every day to protect our environment, using their research and local knowledge to guide our decisions.

Expanding ASHMuskoka

One initiative I would like to see expanded is Friends of the Muskoka Watershed’s ASHMuskoka wood ash recycling program. It collects clean ash from residential woodstoves and fireplaces for research and forest restoration, helping replenish calcium depleted by acid rain. This is a practical example of residents and environmental experts working together to support healthier forests.

A Greener Downtown

My environmental commitment also shapes my vision for downtown revitalization. For years, we have covered much of our downtown core with asphalt. I want to bring more trees, gardens and other vegetation into these spaces, creating a greener, healthier and more welcoming downtown.

My downtown revitalization plans include a minimum of 60 trees, along with additional gardens and vegetative installations. These would provide shade, help reduce summer heat and create inviting places to walk, gather and enjoy our community. Bringing more nature into our downtown also supports residents’ health and well-being.

As mayor, I will work to ensure that the decisions we make today protect what makes Huntsville special for generations to come.
